Virginia Tech blew out Georgia Tech, 59-43, in the 2011 ACC Tournament quarterfinals. The game was pretty much as ugly as the score indicated, with the Hokies jumping ahead 15-2 right off the bat. The Hokies took a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the game, and Georgia Tech never cut it down to single digits.
ACC Tournament 2011 Bracket Update: Virginia Tech Routs Georgia Tech
If this was the end of the Paul Hewitt era in Georgia Tech, it was a particularly awful ending. The Yellow Jackets’ coach has been on the hot seat recently, and a blowout loss in front of very few fans in the opening round of the ACC Tournament won’t help his cause. The Yellow Jackets shot 32 percent from the field and 22 percent from three-point range.
Malcolm Delaney scored 15 points to lead the Hokies, who advanced essentially because they weren't as horrible as the Yellow Jackets. The Hokies move to 20-10 on the year and strengthen their bubble position for the NCAA Tournament. The Yellow Jackets fall to 13-18 and likely ended Hewitt's career with the school.
