The final series tally for the San Diego State-BYU trilogy still stands 2-1 in BYU’s favor. But the final score from the Mountain West Conference Tournament final: San Diego State 72, BYU 54, and given how well the Aztecs played in shutting down Jimmer Fredette and his supporting cast, it may be the most important of the three results.
Mountain West Basketball Championship 2011: San Diego State Rolls BYU And Jimmer Fredette, 72-54
Fredette got his, scoring 30 points to lead all scorers. But it took him 25 shots to tally that number, and non-Fredette BYU players made just nine shots combined.
San Diego State didn’t have any such problems with balance. Billy White lead the Aztecs with 21 points, but he, Kawhi Leonard, and Chase Tapley all shot 50% or better from the field in scoring in double figures. And the Aztecs got 14 offensive rebounds and eight steals, fueling an offense that made the most of transition and second chance opportunities all night.
