Jeff Capel Officially Released As Oklahoma’s Head Basketball Coach
Jeff Capel has officially been “released” from his contract with the Oklahoma Sooners, four days after a disappointing 2010-11 season came to an end in the Big 12 Tournament. The university made the official announcement Monday afternoon. Oklahoma Vice President and Athletics Director Joe Castiglione will hold a press conference at 5 p.m. EDT (live webcast will be available).
The Oklahoman reports that the buyout will cost the school between $2 and $3 million.

In 2009-10, Oklahoma posted a 13-18 record, its first losing season since 1981.
Capel took over for Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma in 2006 and coached the Sooners to a 94-61 overall mark in five seasons. He twice led OU to the NCAA Tournament, including an Elite Eight appearance in the 2008-09 season, a year the Sooners finished 30-6 overall.
