The Oklahoma Sooners have fired men's basketball coach Jeff Capel after five seasons with the university, according to Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated. The decision comes after a 14-18 record in 2010-11, marking the first time Oklahoma has had consecutive losing seasons in 44 years.
Jeff Capel Reportedly Fired As Head Basketball Coach At Oklahoma
In 2009-10, Oklahoma posted a 13-18 record, its first losing season since 1981.
Capel took over for Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma in 2006 and coached the Sooners to a 94-61 overall mark in five seasons. He twice led OU to the NCAA Tournament, including an Elite Eight appearance in the 2008-09 season, a year the Sooners finished 30-6 overall.
Capel, the starting point guard for the Duke Blue Devils from 1993-97, began his coaching career as an assistant at Old Dominion in 2000. He took over the VCU program in 2002 and in just his second year as head coach of the Rams, guided them to a 23-8 record and the NCAA Tournament. In four seasons at VCU, Capel had a 79-41 record.
