To get to March Madness and have a chance of playing Cinderella, Atlantic Sun bully Belmont first had to take care of its own conference’s glass slipper aspirants. Unfortunately for North Florida, Belmont was having none of their fairytale run: the Bruins roared past the Ospreys en route to an 89-47 rout in the Atlantic Sun Tournament final, and clinched their conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
2011 NCAA Tournament Field: Belmont Joins March Madness As Atlantic Sun Representative
Mick Hedgespeth led the Bruins and all scorers with 23 points, but Belmont’s domination was total. The Bruins forced 25 turnovers and committed just five, outrebounded North Florida 39-17, and outscored the Ospreys by 19 points in the first half and 23 in the second.
That’s the sort of performance Belmont’s been putting together in game after game this year, and the Bruins have earned a bit of respect as an NCAA Tournament sleeper. Three of the Bruins’ four losses are to Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Chris Dobbertean had Belmont as a 13 seed entering today.
