All signs are pointing to George Mason men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga becoming the next head coach of Miami basketball, according to several reports Friday morning.
Jim Larranaga, Miami Basketball Close To Deal To Bring Mason Coach To ‘Canes
George Mason’s athletic director granted Larranaga’s request to meet with Miami, and according to the Miami Herald, the two sides were close to an agreement on Thursday night. The reports indicate the deal is pending approval from Miami’s president Donna Shalala and could be announced as early as Friday afternoon.
If Larranaga does leave Mason for Miami, it’ll certainly be a surprising decision. Miami is a program that is in the rebuilding process; not exactly the ideal set-up for a coach who will be 62 when the season starts. The decision to take the Miami job would have to be based mostly on money. Larranaga makes $700,000 per year at Mason; Miami is likely to offer significantly more than that.
