Oklahoma Basketball Admits Major Violations, Recommends NCAA Penalties

One of the quieter NCAA investigations of a busy summer is likely close to being over. Oklahoma is admitting two major violations stemming from assistant coach Oronde Taliaferro’s involvement with an adviser who helped get former Oklahoma player Tiny Gallon to Norman, and suggesting penalties to the NCAA that include vacating the 2009-10 season, the loss of a scholarship, and some other curtailing of recruiting.

Oklahoma’s summary deposition — possibly one of the NCAA’s first of its kind — indicated no lack of institutional control or failure to monitor.

The Sooners’ 2009-10 season was a disappointing one: following a Blake Griffin-powered run to the Elite Eight in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the 2009-10 Oklahoma squad managed just a 13-18 record, dropping its final nine games and 15 of its last 20.

Taliaferro resigned after the 2010 season. Jeff Capel, Oklahoma’s head coach in 2009-10, was “released” this May.
