When Jim Calhoun Is Away, The Huskies Will Play (And Not Give Him Credit)

UConn Huskies coach Jim Calhoun has a career record of 865-368, putting him sixth on the all-time wins list, just behind Syracuse Orange coach Jim Boeheim (871-301), making theirs a friendly race to the record books between Hall of Fame rivals.

When it was announced that Calhoun would be suspended for the first three Big East game of this season, many (read: Syracuse fans) wondered if Calhoun would receive credit for any wins on assistant coach George Blaney’s watch.

Much to SU fans’ delight, he will not. Often times, it’s a decision left to the schools whether or not to credit a coach who misses a game. In this instance, the NCAA stepped in to make an official ruling:

“This is consistent with the complete removal of the coach from all aspects of game preparation from the time the last game the coach is allowed to be present for ends through the end of the final game of the suspension period.”

And so, when he returns, Calhoun will still be 865-368. And George Blaney will now be 461-383 alltime as he adds two wins and a loss to his head coaching record, which includes a long stint at Holy Cross and time at Seton Hall.
