NIT Tournament 2012 First Round: UMass Wins Double-OT Thriller Over Mississippi State

There’s no doubt that tonight’s first First Four game provided excitement tonight, but it pales in comparison to what went down in Starkville.

Led by Chaz Williams’ 28 points, UMass blew a second-half lead, but prevailed in their first-round NIT Tournament game, with a thrilling 101-96 victory over Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs had their chances to win in regulation and overtime. Most notable was a Dee Bost runner, which fell short as regulation time expired.

Arnett Moultrie poured in a career-high 34 points, which capped off a great individual season for the big man that will certainly compel him to consider whether or not to go to declare for this summer's NBA Draft.

With the loss, the Bulldogs end a season filled with promise, one which they likely did not expect to not only fail to make the NCAA Tournament, but not advance in the opening round of the NIT at home.

They lost seven of their last nine games to close out the season

The Minutemen advance to play Seton Hall in the second round, who is the top-seed on their side of the bracket.
