NIT Tournament 2012 Schedule And Bracket: UMass And Washington Advance To Quarterfinals

The second round of the NIT tipped off on Saturday, with the Seton Hall Pirates hosting the UMass Minutemen at historic Walsh Gymnasium on the campus of the Hall. The No. 5 seed UMass went into New Jersey and pulled off the upset over the No. 1 seeded Pirates, winning 77-67. The Minutemen had four starters in double figures, led by Chaz Williams who dropped 20 by getting into the lane and getting to the line on a consistent basis. Williams hit 10 of 14 free-throws in the win.

The Pirates were simply ice cold and could get nothing going on the offensive end to stave off the upset. Kevin Willard's club hit just 5 of 27 attempts from behind the arc for a sub 20 percent mark. The win puts UMass into the quarterfinals along with the Washington Huskies, who defeated Northwestern late Friday night in Seattle. Terrence Ross went off for 32 points in the Huskies 21-point throttling of the Wildcats.

There are six second round games remaining, with three scheduled for Sunday and three scheduled for Monday. Washington will play the winner of the Oregon and Iowa game set for Sunday evening while UMass will get the winner of Drexel and UNI, scheduled for Sunday at 11:00 am.
