Colorado State’s plan to hire Ernie Kent as its next head basketball coach has been vetoed by a high-ranking administrator, according to CBSSports.com.
Colorado State Blocks Ernie Kent Hire, Larry Eustachy Back In The Mix
“It was done and somebody vetoed it,” a source said. “Now Ernie is out.”
It had previously been reported that the two sides had struck a deal Tuesday night and that Kent’s introduction could come as early as Wednesday. Now with the former Oregon head coach out of the picture, the focus turns to Southern Mississippi’s Larry Eustachy, whom many are pegging as the leading candidate to land the job.
Colorado State is looking to replace Tim Miles, who left to take the job at Nebraska last month. The Rams went 20-12 last season and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. They will return most of the key parts of that team.
Eustachy is 142-113 over eight seasons at Southern Miss, and just led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament for the first time under his watch. He is still best known for being fired at Iowa State after pictures of him drinking and kissing co-eds at a University of Missouri fraternity party surfaced in 2003.
