Wake Forest transfer Tony Chennault was granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA on Monday, making him eligible to play for Villanova during the 2012-13 season.

The timing couldn't be better for 'Nova, which loses starting guards Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek from last year's team. The Wildcats were a disappointing 13-19 in 2011-12, and missed the postseason entirely.

“The Chennault family has been dealing with so much this year,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said in a statement Monday afternoon. “Tony’s mom has faced health issues and his brother, Mike Jay, died tragically earlier this month. We are grateful that the NCAA has taken these unique circumstances into account, and I know Tony is excited about the opportunity to be on the court with us next season.”

Chennault averaged 9.2 points per game as a sophomore last season at Wake. He joins rising sophomore Ty Johnson and incoming freshman Ryan Arcidiacono as Wright’s main backcourt options.
