The best part of the college football polls every week is the discussion they bring. With that in mind, a rundown of the winners and losers from this week’s rankings.
College Football Rankings: The Winners And Losers Of The Week 7 Polls
Winners
South Carolina is the big winner in the Week 7 polls. The Gamecocks’ victory over Alabama vaults them from the lower regions of the top 20 in both polls to near the top 10. With just two ranked teams left on the schedule and a one-game lead on the SEC East, South Carolina has a great chance to make its first SEC Championship Game this year.
Michigan State is also moving up. The Spartans lurk just outside the top 10 in both polls and stand to benefit from the inevitable SEC carnage.
Boise State and TCU also rank among the big winners. Though every team in the top 10 was helped by Alabama’s loss, the Broncos are now in line to play in the BCS Championship Game should Ohio State or Oregon lose, and TCU’s hot on their heels.
The AP Poll voters deserve commendation, too, for elevating Oregon State after a big win over Arizona, and keeping virtually untested Oklahoma State and Missouri squads on the outskirts of the top 20.
Losers
The big losers this week are Sunshine State squads Miami and Florida, both falling after home losses to conference foes. Florida’s loss was at least of the heartbreaking variety, which keeps the Gators in the top 25; Miami falls out of both rankings after being shellacked by FSU.
Arizona tasted defeat for the first time this season after a loss to Oregon State, and the Wildcats fell in both polls because of it.
And of course, the coaches show up in the losers category for, among other issues, ranking Michigan State ahead of South Carolina, Oklahoma State and Missouri ahead of Nevada, and Nebraska ahead of TCU.
