Almost lost in all the hype about Cam Newton’s amazing touchdown run in today’s LSU-Auburn game is that it set the school record for TDs responsible for in a single season, a mark that’s stood for 40 years, since Pat Sullivan ran for nine scores and passed for 17 in 1970.
Auburn Breaking Records At, Well, Record-Breaking Pace
Through eight games, Newton has rushed for 14 -- adding two today -- and passed for 13 more, a total of 27. That also gives him a good shot at the school record for rushing TDs in a season, currently at 17, and a decent chance at breaking the passing mark of 22.
Newton, meanwhile, continues to pile up more rushing yards in a season than any other SEC quarterback has ever had. Jimmy Siddle of Auburn set the record with 1,006 yards in 1963; Newton has already blown past that mark by 70 yards. To highlight: He still has four games of the regular season, a potential SEC Championship Game and a bowl game to go.
But Auburn's quarterback is not the only one breaking records. Kicker Wes Byrum has already notched his 315th point, passing former kicker John Vaughn for the career record. Vaughn had 312 points from 2003-06 and his own memorable game against LSU, though it is only memorable in the sense that he will never forget it no matter how hard he tries: Vaughn missed five FGs in the 2005 loss to LSU.
