On Saturday, Virginia achieved a big 24-19 win over No. 22 Miami, but the Hurricanes nearly pulled off one of the wildest fourth-quarter comebacks in recent memory.
Virginia 24, No. 22 Miami 19: Stephen Morris, Hurricanes Fall Short After Enormous Rally
Entering the fourth quarter, Virginia held a 24-0 lead over the Hurricanes, who had lost starting quarterback Jacory Harris to injury. Harris had been replaced with Spencer Whipple, who was soon replaced with Stephen Morris, a freshman.
In the fourth, Morris threw two touchdowns and ran for another. Thanks to a missed two-point conversion and a missed extra point, the score was 24-19 Virginia with minutes remaining. The remarkable comeback bid was ended when Commodore quarterback Marc Verica found Kris Burd for a 20-yard completion, as Miami had run out of ways to stop the clock.
Fans stormed the field after unranked Virginia’s win was official, and head coach Mike London fell to his knees and wept on the sideline.
