Spencer Lanning made his third field goal of more than 40 yards on the night to end the second quarter with South Carolina leading by eight. The play was set up by a long Marcus Lattimore screen pass that Lattimore alertly took out of bounds when he ran out of real estate.
South Carolina Vs. Florida: Spencer Lanning Makes His Case For MVP, Gamecocks Lead 15-7
For the half, Marcus Lattimore has 21 carries for 83 yards and the sole Carolina touchdown. Stephen Garcia has been steady but not spectacular (11-of-16 108 yards, no picks). The Gamecocks secondary has held its own so far, though Florida has only tried nine passes and John Brantley has missed some open receivers. Florida’s rushing attack has only generated 19 yards on nine carries. After Arkansas torched the South Carolina defense last week, the Gators have only crossed midfield once.
Despite the edge the Gamecocks hold in the major statistical categories — they have 15 first downs to Florida’s 2 and have outgained the Gators 209-51 — it’s still a one-possession game. The right adjustments, and things could turn around quickly
