A Week Until The Iron Bowl, And The Ante Has Already Been Upped

How popular is Cam Newton right now, despite all the allegations of his father running a pay-for-play scheme on his recruitment out of junior college? Apparently so popular that even Bear Bryant has gotten caught up in the craze.

Yes, that’s the fine handiwork of a daring Auburn fan who taped a Cam Newton jersey not just to any statue of Bear Bryant -- but to the statue of Bear Bryant that stands outside Bryant-Denny Stadium. This, for those of you not born in Alabama, is more than a mere rivalry taunt. The very thought of the Bear wearing a blue jersey -- well, we should applaud the restraint of Alabama fans for not immediately burning Auburn-Opelika to the ground. (Actually, perhaps we should wait until after the game -- which is still a week away -- to do that.)

But this does raise an interesting hypothetical question: If the Bear Bryant statue sells its Cam Newton jersey to an agent, does that count against Bryant’s eligibility or Newton’s? Because it’s not looking like the Auburn quarterback has that many strikes left.
