The Texas Longhorns, a staple in not just the bowl picture, but the BCS picture, will not be bowl-eligible this year after falling to the Texas A&M Aggies, 24-17. The loss closes-out a disappointing 5-7 season for the Longhorns, falling far short of what anyone could’ve expected for the 2010 campaign. To add insult to injury, it was rival Texas A&M preventing them from obtaining the necessary six wins to make a bowl game.
No. 17 Texas A&M Vs. Texas: Aggies Drop Longhorns, 24-17; Texas Misses Bowl Eligibility
The Lonestar Classic didn’t lack drama, however. Playing for their lives, Texas scrapped and clawed, nearly coming back from down 10 to tie the game. Garrett Gilbert threw for 207 yards and a touchdown in the loss, but added two costly interceptions, one of which killed a potential game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter. Foswhitt Whittaker did it all for the Longhorns, rushing for 35 yards and catching five passes for 59 yards to lead the Texas receivers. Cody Johnson added for 107 yards on 14 carries for Texas.
A&M's success can be traced to running back Cryus Gray. The junior had another outstanding day, rushing for 223 yards and two touchdowns, including an impressive 84-yard touchdown run in the first half. Ryan Tannehill completed 14 of 31 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown while handling the signal-calling duties for the Aggies. Kenric McNeal added a game-high 64 yards on six catches.
Texas A&M improves to 10-3 with the win while Texas falls to 5-7. The Aggies will await their bowl invitation while Texas heads to the offseason, wondering what went wrong.
