The first quarter of LSU-Arkansas 2010 is history, and so far in the much-anticipated battle between the Razorbacks' high-octane offense and the Tigers' never-say-die defense, it appears the former may have a slight edge.
The nigh-untopplable Ryan Mallett is brought low on the Hogs' first drive, sacked by Kelvin Sheppard for a third-down stop and a forced punt. LSU's offense, however, is displaying highly Crowtonian tendencies, and is stymied by a 5-yard penalty. Arkansas, ever polite, muffs the punt catch, but recovers, and Mallet and Knile Davis take over at their own 4-yard line.
Davis and Joe Adams own the Hogs' five-minute drive, which almost doubles in length when Mallett fumbles on 3rd-and-1, Arkansas recovers, LSU fumbles the punt return and gives the ball right back. The most discombobulated series of Week 13 ends on a missed 41-yard field goal off the foot of Zach Hocker.
Not to be outdone, LSU starts a drive with a 30-yard Jordan Jefferson pass to Spencer Ware, and ends it with a missed 43-yard field goal of their own. Mallett wastes no time in completing two passes totaling 52 yards to Jarius Wright and D.J. Williams, and the Hogs sagely keep it on the ground and let Knile Davis take in a four-yard touchdown run. Jarrett Lee comes on for an ineffectual LSU series, and that'll about do it for this first period.
At the end of the first quarter, Arkansas leads LSU, 7-0.
