2010 Military Bowl Game: Time, Location, History And More

To help prime you for Wednesday’s college football tripleheader, we’ve compiled this handy list of fun factoids concerning the 2010 Military Bowl.
Proper name: Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman, which is hard to spell and tempting to shorten but these are probably not folks we want to defy.

Setting: RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C., former home of the Redskins and currently housing the MLS’ D.C. United.

Traditional conference pairing: “Traditional” is pushing it for a game that’s only been in existence since 2008, but the setup going forward will feature an ACC team versus a rotating opponent.

2010 matchup: The 8-4 Maryland Terrapins versus the 6-6 East Carolina Pirates.

Announcers: Brace yourselves. Pam Ward has the call, with Danny Kanell and Quint Kessenich on backup vocals.

Neatest fact: The game-no-longer-known-as-the-EagleBank-Bowl should have been called the Ben’s Chili Bowl for a true D.C. tie-in, but wasn’t, which, in retrospect, is not neat at all.

Closest finish: EagleBank Bowl II, where UCLA beat Temple by nine points. Ooooh!

Most lopsided finish: EagleBank Bowl I, where Wake Forest beat Navy by ten points, 29-19. Aaaah!
Tidbits of interest: This game was tentatively titled the Congressional Bowl in its inception, which would have been awkward had it been allowed to continue, what with no members of Congress in town for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Oh, and the game ball will be delivered by robot, if you’re into that kind of thing.

The 2010 Military Bowl kicks off at 2:30 p.m. EST, Wednesday, December 29. The game will be televised on ESPN. For a complete list of bowls, browse our 2010 college football postseason schedule.
