Speculation about Maryland’s coaching search had died down of late. Rumors about Mike Leach and Gus Malzahn coming to College Park had died down, and a brief whisper of Rich Rodriguez’ name seemed like a blip.
Report: Randy Edsall To Replace Ralph Friedgen At Maryland
But now it seems that Maryland has made a choice, and selected someone who wasn’t even whispered about before: Connecticut coach Randy Edsall.
At least, that’s what ESPN’s Joe Schad tweets:
Maryland has chosen UConn’s Randy Edsall as head coachIf that’s true, it’s clear that Maryland either moved quickly on Edsall after Connecticut lost Saturday night’s Fiesta Bowl to Oklahoma, or kept its pursuit of Edsall nearly silent after confirming that Ralph Friedgen would not return in 2011.
Edsall has been Connecticut’s head coach since 1999, and took the Huskies from Division 1-AA to Division 1-A independence to, in 2010, a Big East championship and BCS bowl berth. He compiled a 74-70 record at UConn, but never won 10 games in a season.
