2011 Senior Bowl: South Leads 10-0 After First Quarter, Jake Locker Struggles

While the 2011 Senior Bowl is a showcase for players trying to improve their NFL Draft stock, it’s also a wonderful melting pot for college greats that sometimes makes for strange bedfellows. Two of them hooked up for the game’s first touchdown.

Florida State’s Christian Ponder led a strong drive for the South, and capped it with a touchdown pass to Miami’s Leonard Hankerson. Though that’s a heresy that could never have happened for the two bitter rivals while in their collegiate colors, it’s been a good-looking connection thus far in Mobile.

The South leads 10-0 after the first quarter, thanks to that 18-yard Hankerson touchdown catch and an earlier chip shot field goal by Josh Jasper. That’s a score that’s revealing for the North’s lack of success so far. And that, in turn, is thanks to Jake Locker’s subpar start.

Locker, whose stock has been tumbling since getting Heisman and first overall NFL Draft pick hype prior to the 2010 season, has struggled in the Senior Bowl, completing just one of his three passes in the first quarter for only two yards. It’s not all him — the North defense isn’t doing much against the South offense, and Locker’s running backs haven’t been effective — but Locker’s performance certainly hasn’t helped his NFL Draft prospects to this point.
