UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero was bluntly asked on an L.A.-based ESPN radio show about football coach Rick Neuheisel’s future and, instead of giving a vote of confidence, put a fire right underneath Neuheisel’s chair in a big way:
Rick Neuheisel’s Status As UCLA Coach ‘Day-To-Day,’ Says AD
UCLA’s AD called football coach Rick Neuheisel’s job status “day-to-day” and said anything less than a bowl berth for the 3-3 Bruins would be a disappointment
“In intercollegiate athletics, we’re pretty much all day-to-day,” Guerrero said. “That’s the reality of our situation. But I said from the very beginning, the key for our program this year was to move the needle, was to obviously improve upon a four-win season (from) last year. We’re certainly not where we want to be as a program, there’s no question about that. We’re certainly not a top-25 team. We’re not there yet.”
Given the opportunity to bolster Neuheisel’s standing, Guerrero politely declined. The Bruins are 3-3, so they seem poised to improve upon last year’s team, but Neuheisel has significantly disappointed in his tenure in the City of Angels.
Guerrero went on to say he was “optimistic” after UCLA’s win over Washington State but, when pressed if a bowl game berth was required for Neuheisel to keep his job for 2012, he would only say he would be “disappointed” if UCLA didn’t get there.
