West Virginia Vs. Syracuse Halftime Score: Upset Alert With A Side Of Ham

It was a brief sequence of events, but it was a spectacular one in the first half of Friday night’s matchup between the Syracuse Orange and West Virginia Mountaineers. The sequence itself was a snapshot of the half, which ended with the Orange leading the 14th-ranked ‘Eers, 21-9. Just as West Virginia seemed to get things going, it took a poke in the eye and a kick to the groin.

To set the scene, Syracuse held a 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter. West Virginia was finally able to drive, punching it in to narrow the deficit to five at 14-9. Then the Mountaineers doinked the upright on the extra point. Bad enough, right? Of course, and it got worse.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dorian Graham bobbed, weaved and found an opening, outrunning the ‘Eers return team for 98 yards and the score. Just like that, 13 seconds after making it a one-score game, West Virginia was down by 12.

And that’s where it stayed as Geno Smith was picked at the goalline, after throwing into triple coverage, near the end of the second quarter. Syracuse was unable to move the ball and West Virginia’s Hail Mary fell about 30 yards short as the Mountaineers headed into the half trailing Syracuse, 21-9.
