We figured West Virginia would head into the locker room, get ripped apart by Dana Holgorsen and come back out with a vengeance. There was no way Syracuse was just that much better than the 14th-ranked Mountaineers. So even with the Orange heading into the halftime with a two-score lead, there was little reason for West Virginia fans to panic.
Syracuse Vs. West Virginia Score: Oh, This Is Happening
Now it’s time to panic. Syracuse widened its lead in the third quarter, and watched as West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith self-destructed. Heading into the final 15 minutes of play, Syracuse holds a 35-16 lead, and has the Mountaineers rattled.
The way the third quarter ended explains it all. Syracuse punched it in to take a 19-point lead, then forced another mistake from Smith. Almost immediately after the touchdown, the Orange pressure Smith, forcing him to throw into coverage and directly at a defensive back. The result was an interception, giving Syracuse another chance to wide its lead early in the final frame.
It’s not looking good for the Mountaineers as they trail Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, 35-16.
