Good luck figuring out the Big East after a Friday night slate that turned the conference into a large tire fire. Louisville played its part in the explosion, downing Rutgers -- previously undefeated in conference play -- by a 16-14 margin. The win means Cincinnati (not joking!) is now in the driver’s seat with its undefeated Big East record.
Louisville Vs. Rutgers Final Score: Big East On Fire After Cardinals’ 16-14 Win
It wasn’t a high-scoring affair, nor was it pretty, but Louisville pulled the upset with a strong enough third quarter. The Scarlet Knights and Cardinals exchanged one-yard touchdown runs in the first and second quarters. Louisville scored first, with Rutgers answering just before the half to knot the score at seven.
In the third quarter is was all Louisville as the Cardinals score nine-straight points to put the Scarlet Knights on the ropes. Chris Philpott kicked a field goal to give the Cardinals a three-point lead and Michaelee Harris caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked, but the Cardinals had a 16-7 lead.
Mohamed Sanu cut the Louisville lead to two early in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as Rutgers would get. Louisville was able to hang on to its 16-14 lead, pulling off the upset while helping rearrange the top-tier of the Big East standings.
