Les Miles To Michigan Almost Happened, According To Book

So maybe Kirk Herbstreit was on to something after all when he reported on-air in 2007 that LSU Tigers coach Les Miles would take over the Michigan Wolverines, according to John U. Bacon's new Michigan book:

Miles tells the Michigan president he “would never say no to Michigan,” but insists he can’t jump from LSU until after the Tigers’ upcoming bowl game. If Michigan waits and asks in January, Miles says, “I will be your coach.”

Something like that had long been suspected -- Miles played two years for Bo Shembechler, and two of his first three coaching jobs were with the Wolverines -- but still ... whoa! This is the No. 1 coach in the country we’re talking about.

Then again, Les Miles says a lot of things, almost all of them misunderstood. He very well could’ve been requesting a piñata full of perseverance for all we know. Chuckle about his eccentricities not going over as well in Ann Arbor as they do in Baton Rouge, but the irony is his run-heavy, defense-first LSU teams would also make for perfect Michigan teams.
