Heisman Trophy 2011 Watch: Landry Jones, Ryan Broyles Tumble Like Oklahoma Did

Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles were never at the head of the Heisman Trophy pack. With Oklahoma reeling after a massive upset, they likely never will be.

Oklahoma was riding high entering its game against Texas Tech, and so were Heisman dark-horse candidates Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles. After the Sooners' loss, though, it's hard to say whether Oklahoma's chances of national title contention or the Jones/Broyles tandem's chances of scoring even one Heisman Trophy presentation ceremony invite between the two of them are worse.

It’s not that Jones and Broyles were bad on Saturday: Jones threw for 412 yards and five touchdowns, though he also had a pick and completed just 30 of his 55 passes, while Broyles was pedestrian, but not invisible, hauling in seven catches for 84 yards. But Oklahoma dropping several rungs in the college football rankings means that Jones and Broyles won’t be examined as thoroughly.

And because there's another quarterback-wide receiver combo in their conference that looks almost as good and has a spotless record — that's Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, of course — it spells doom for Jones and Broyles' chances of giving Oklahoma a third Heisman Trophy in nine years.
