Case Keenum’s Nine-Touchdown Game Tops One Team’s Entire Season

Veteran Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum broke Graham Harrell's FBS touchdowns record Thursday night against the Rice Owls, but he didn't have to do it like that. Nine touchdowns, only two shy of David Klingler's all-time NCAA record. And he did it in the rain. However, Klingler's record came against Eastern Washington, which is -- well, they're almost as good as Rice. But still!

Some FUN STATS FACTS:

  • With nine touchdowns on the night, one not-so-young man's arm surpassed Kent State's touchdown total through seven games. FAU only has nine total touchdowns in seven games. Kentucky and Louisville, BCS conference programs, have just 14 each, more than halfway through their seasons.
  • Keenum now has 139 career touchdowns. The all-time NCAA record is 148, shared by Division II East Stroudsburg's Jimmy Terwilliger and Division III Westminster's Justin Peery. Keenum has five or six games left in what's hopefully his last senior season.
  • Houston compiled 656 yards in a single evening. Kent State's got 1,270 on the season. Apologies to Nick Saban's alma mater. Apologies to Nick Saban.
  • Houston's Patrick Edwards caught 318 yards and five touchdowns worth of passes. Only 20 receivers besides Edwards have more than five touchdowns on the year.
  • Keenum now has 32 touchdown passes this year. At his current pace, he could challenge for single-season touchdown records, assuming Houston makes the Conference USA title game and a bowl game (PRETTY STRONG ASSUMPTION). He's on pace to wind up with 56, two shy of Colt Brennan's FBS record and five short of Brett Elliot's NCAA record.
  • With 267 more yards, he'll pass Timmy Chang's FBS record. This could happen during church on Sunday.
  • Oh, and Tyron Carrier tied the NCAA record for career kickoff returns for touchdowns, with seven.

Keenum and friends: pretty good at sports.
