Andrew Gonnella Injury: Maryland Senior Suffers Leg Injury, Leaves Field In Ambulance

Andrew Gonnella, Maryland's lone senior on the offensive line, left Saturday's game against Georiga Tech in the fourth quarter with a serious leg injury -- so serious, in fact, that he needed to leave the field in an ambulance. The game was stopped for about 14 minutes while Gonnella was being tended to on the field. From Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun:

Terps :OL Andrew Gonnella raised his arm and waved as he was placed into ambulance. His bare left foot was being elevated.

Early speculation on Twitter is that Gonnella suffered a compound fracture in his leg, meaning the bone broke through his skin. This has not been officially confirmed, though, and is likely pure speculation considering the injury was so gruesome that ESPN decided against showing the replay. Either way, it’s clearly a serious injury, and one that may cost him the rest of the season.

Before Gonnella’s injury, Maryland looked like they had a chance to upset Georgia Tech, scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets held on, though, winning 21-16. The Terrapins fall to 2-3 on the season, while Georgia Tech preserved their perfect record, winning their sixth straight.
