College Football Saturday: Nebraska Comeback Follows Big LSU, Oklahoma Wins

Minnesota scored a couple of consolation touchdowns late, but the game was almost over before it started. Nebraska went into halftime up 34-0, then didn’t really put in the same level of effort in the second half. It’s hard to blame them.

There’s still a second half to go, but Auburn’s in a hole that seems insurmountable. And there’s no Cam Newton to save it this year.

Nebraska continues to look like one of the Big Ten’s better teams. Playing a Minnesota outfit that appears to be the conference’s absolute worst certainly helps in that regard.

The Huskers lead 27-0 in the second quarter of this Week 8 tussle, and have scored points on offense and defense. Two long first quarter drives produced a passing touchdown and a field goal; an 82-yard run by Kenny Bell opened Nebraska’s scoring in the second frame; Austin Cassidy’s 11-yard return of a Marqueis Gray fumble is just the latest touchdown of the day.

Georgia Tech burst out of the gate in the 2011 college football season. Now, midway through the ACC schedule, the Yellow Jackets look more like their Rambling Wreck nickname: they’re down 7-0 to Miami in the second quarter at Sun Life Stadium, despite the Hurricanes dealing with struggles of their own.

The bright side of this game: someone has to win.

Arkansas fell behind 17-0 on the road at Mississippi. Then the Razorbacks roared back, scored 29 straight points, and weathered a late Rebels comeback for a hard-won 29-24 win on the road.

Dennis Johnson ran for a career-best 160 yards and a touchdown in the win, making up for Tyler Wilson’s struggles (13 completions on 28 attempts) in the passing game. The Hogs clamped down on defense and revved up on offense in the second half, holding Mississippi to just one drive of more than 35 yards and putting up over 300 total yards.

Battlefield conditions: Perfect. Weather in the 50s and 60s, slightly overcast skies. Ideal battle weather all around the theaters of action.

Support issues: All over the place. Florida took severe casualties, the worst since the1996 Fiesta Bowl, thanks to a depletion of the quarterback, offensive line, wide receivers, and numerous other units. Children enlisted out of desperation to help; massive losses incurred as a result of facing superior firepower. Backup and reinforcements requested immediately.

To answer, Ohio State took the ensuing kick off and decided to go three-and-out after two straight horrible incompletions by quarterback Joe Bauserman. The last thing Ohio State needed if they wanted to get back into the game was a three-and-out and give Nebraska’s hot offense the ball back. The Huskers have now scored 28 unanswered points in the second half.

The Georgia Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the season, 3-1 in the SEC, with a 20-12 win over Tennessee on Saturday night. Georgia built its lead in the third quarter, then hung on down the stretch as the Vols struggled to find the end zone throughout.

Tyler Bray completed 20 of 37 passes for 261 yards, but failed to throw a touchdown for Tennessee. Matt Simms was four of six for 39 yards, as well. Sims scored the Vols’ only touchdown of the game, plunging into the end zone from a yard out late in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska has the ball as it stands, they’ll be looking to get back within a touchdown and try to pull off the comeback.

Running back Trent Richardson also found a groove in the second half. He completed the game with 107 yards on 19 carries. He punched the ball in at the one-yard line for a score in the third quarter.

Alabama (6-0) heads to Oxford, Miss., next week for a match with the Ole Miss Rebels.

Stephens went down as he took a helmet to his left knee and it went a way it shouldn’t. Stephens was carted off the field in an injury that looks like it’s done for the season. If you did not see the injury, you may recall an injury Willias McGahee suffered while he was at the University of Miami. People across twitter have compared Stepens’ injury to McGahee’s. When more is know about his injury, SB Nation will update you. It doesn’t look good, though.
