Andrew Gonnella Injury: Maryland Senior Suffers Compound Fracture To Leg

Maryland senior offensive lineman Andrew Gonnella, who left Saturday's game in an ambulance, reportedly suffered a compound fracture in his leg, meaning a broken bone pierced through his skin.

“I didn’t see what happened, but I heard people saying there was bone sticking out,” safety Eric Franklin said, according to the Washington Times. “We just have to keep him on our prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.”

Gonnella was injured during the fourth quarter of Maryland’s loss to Georgia Tech. The game was stopped for roughly 15 minutes while he was tended to on the field. The injury occurred in the middle of the pile and was not readily apparent on television; ESPN opted against showing the replay, apparently because it was deemed too gruesome.

Without giving specific details on Gonnella’s injury, Maryland head coach Randy Edsall heaped praise on the senior in his post-game comments.

“If he can’t come back, he’s going to be sorely missed,” Edsall said. “He’s been a great leader for us, and just a guy who loves the game of football. ... Now we have to take a piece of him and go out there and play for him as well.”

Gonnella is Maryland’s only senior on the offensive line. The Terrapins trailed for most of Saturday’s game but showed signs of life by scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The rally fell short, however, as the No. 13-ranked Yellow Jackets held on for the 21-16 win.
