Bob Davie Hired As New Mexico Football Coach

Former Notre Dame head coach Bob Davie has been hired by New Mexico to take over the Lobos’ football program, according to an ESPN report. Davie is currently working for ESPN as a college football analyst. Davie would replace George Barlow, who has been the interim coach since Mike Locklsey was fired back in September after going 2-26 over two-plus seasons.

Davie will have his work cut out for him. The 57-year-old has not coached since being fired by Notre Dame in 2001. He had gone 35-25 over five seasons, but his tenure was largely considered a disappointment.

He’ll take over a New Mexico team has not been to a bowl game since the 2007 New Mexico Bowl. That was also the last time the Lobos had a winning season, going 9-4 in Rocky Long’s penultimate year. The Lobos went 65-69 under Long, appearing in five bowl games during his final seven seasons, although they only won one of those.

Part of the problem Locksley faced and Davie will also have to deal with is a simple lack of high level recruits in the state of New Mexico, which has just one three-star recruit. As a point of comparison, there are at least five high schools in the Tampa, Fla. area with more.
