Before the Pittsburgh Panthers and Cincinnati Bearcats were Big East rivals, they were River City rivals.
The River City Rivalry is the name given to the annual game played between Pitt and Cincy. The rivalry itself is relatively new, played regularly only since 2005, during which season the rivalry trophy was introduced. However, defore the rivalry was titled, the two teams played each other in 1921, 1922, 1979, and 1981.
The game has only ever been played as a regular season matchup in either Cincinnati or Pittsburgh at each respective University’s home football stadium.
With the Panthers leaving the Big East for the ACC, the future of the River City Rivalry is in the air, making each game and ownership of the Paddlewheel Trophy that much more important to win.
Series record: Pittsburgh leads, 8-2.
Last year’s result: Pittsburgh won, 28-10.
Current streak: Pittsburgh has won one game in a row.
Longest-ever streak: Pittsburgh won seven games in a row.
