Two games into the 2011 Georgia Bulldogs' season, things went so poorly that some fans began to call for the head of coach Mark Richt. Since then, Richt and the Bulldogs have rattled off an impressive ten-straight victories and find themselves in the SEC Championship Game against the No. 1 LSU Tigers.
LSU Vs. Georgia, SEC Championship 2011 Preview: Mark Richt’s Job Secure...For Now
You’d think that Mark Richt’s immediate future would be settled. But if that’s what you think, you don’t know SEC Football.
Georgia President Michael Adams held his monthly cabinet meeting on Thursday and when asked about Richt’s future, he threw out a joke that reads a lot more interestingly than it was said.
“If we win Saturday, he’ll be back. If we lose, we’re going to fire him.”
As mentioned, it was said in jest and everyone laughed when he said it. However, it speaks to a larger issue about just what in the heck Richt has to do to get some serious respect from Athens?
And there you have it. Given a chance to secure the livelihood of his coach for a few more years—a coach who has averaged nearly 10 wins a season and led Georgia to 10 straight wins this fall going into Saturday’s SEC championship game against LSU—Adams punted.
He told a poorly-timed joke and then couldn’t bring himself to say Richt will be the coach at Georgia next year. Period.
