Sonny Dykes Signs Louisiana Tech Extension, Ending Houston Rumors

Sonny Dykes has signed an extension to keep him at the helm of Louisiana Tech football through 2017.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs head football coach Sonny Dykes has agreed to a contract extension and decided to stay as the Bulldogs' head coach, ending speculation he would replace Kevin Sumlin as the Houston Cougars new coach.

Dykes led the Bulldogs to the WAC Championship is in his second season as head coach and will lead them into Wednesday night's Poinsettia Bowl against TCU.

The extension will keep Dykes at Louisiana Tech through the 2017 season (via Shreveport Times).

“I am excited about the future of our program,” Dykes said Wednesday. “I look forward to greater success for our football team. I want to thank Dr. Reneau and Bruce Van De Velde for their commitment to build this program the right way.”

Dykes' first major college coaching job was with the Kentucky Wildcats as a graduate assistant. After a stop at Northeast Louisiana, he spent seven years as an assistant coach at Texas Tech before leaving to become the offensive coordinator at Arizona. In January of 2010, he was hired to succeed Derek Dooley as Louisiana Tech head coach.
