Tony Levine Hired As Houston Head Coach, According To Report

Interim coach Tony Levine has been selected as the new Houston Cougars football coach, a source has confirmed to CBS' Bruce Feldman.

Levine replaces Kevin Sumlin, who left Houston to take the Texas A&M job last week. Houston finished the regular season 12-1 and is preparing for the TicketCity Bowl where they'll play the Penn St. Nittany Lions.

Levine was the assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and tight ends coach for Houston, where he's been since 2008. Prior to joining the Cougars staff, he spent two years as the Carolina Panthers' assistant strength and conditioning coach. He also worked with Auburn, Louisville and Louisiana Tech in varying capacities.

During Levine’s three-year tenure at UH, the special teams unit has 16 blocked kicks, seven kickoff returns for touchdowns and six forced turnovers. Those groups tied five NCAA records and set nine school marks. The seven kickoff returns for touchdowns are the most by any FBS school over the past three years.

A walk-on wide receiver at Minnesota, Levine was a three-year starter and was twice named to the Academic All-Big Ten team.
