Belk Bowl 2011: N.C. State Gets More Breathing Room From Louisville, Up 31-17 After Three

Though the Louisville Cardinals successfully executed a fake punt and an onside kick in the third quarter, they still find themselves with an even bigger deficit entering the fourth quarter than they came in with, as the N.C. State Wolfpack lead 31-17.

The big play for the Wolfpack was Cardinals quarterback Teddy Bridgewater's second interception of the game; this one was returned 64 yards for a touchdown by David Amerson, opening up a 31-10 lead. In the ensuing possession, Louisville, on fourth-and-5, hatched a perfect fake punt run, going for 34 yards, and the drive culminated in a two-yard touchdown strike from Bridgewater to Nate Nord to cut the lead to 31-17.

On the very next play, the Cardinals recovered a perfectly drawn-up onside kick, but a dropped pass on third down stopped their momentum cold, as they had to punt for real. Still down two touchdowns, with no answer for Wolfpack quarterback Mike Glennon, it's going to take a lot more trickery from Cardinals coach Charlie Strong to get back in this one.
