Georgia Southern Vs. Maine, 2011 FCS Playoffs: Black Bears Boast Stout D

The Maine Black Bears will take on the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the 2011 FCS Playoff quarterfinals. After holding Appalachian State to just three total yards rushing, the Black Bears hope to slow down the Eagles’ vaunted triple option attack.

The Maine Black Bears absolutely dismantled Appalachian State last week, holding the traditionally strong Mountaineers to just three total yards rushing for the game in a 34-12 victory. During Saturday's 2011 FCS Playoff quarterfinal against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday, the Black Bears defense will have a much tougher task on hand. The Eagles run a vaunted triple option attack that has racked up nearly 4,000 yards rushing on the season. Maine head coach Jack Cosgrove know that the Black Bears can't rest on their laurels.

“There is no doubt they played very well last week,” Cosgrove said. “We are going to have to be better this week. We played well as a unit; they did a good job supporting each other as a group. But we have to move on from a team that ran an offense that we have experience against to an offense we don’t have much experience against.”

As for the offense, Cosgrove admitted that playing sounded, mistake-free football would be the goal above all.

“We have to make darn sure to play fundamentally good football,” Cosgrove said. “Ball security is going to be a major coaching point leading up to the game. We have to eliminate turnovers as well. Everybody from the pass protectors to the run blockers has to play a sound, solid, fundamental football game.”

Saturday’s game will be shown on ESPN3 at 2:00 p.m. ET. For a full television schedule of the weekend’s FCS action, check out SB Nation’s college football hub.
