Jadeveon Clowney To South Carolina: Have Top Recruits Translated To National Titles?

Jadeveon Clowney will be a South Carolina Gamecock. But will the South Carolina Gamecocks win SEC and national titles with him in Columbia?

The National Football Post analyzed the careers of the last 25 years of top recruits, and found just six that won national championships: Ricky Watters at Notre Dame; Marquette Smith, Chris Weinke — albeit ten years after his original commitment in 1990 — and Anquan Boldin at Florida State; D.J. Williams at Miami; and Vince Young at Texas.

What’s more, the Post writes:

You could easily make the case that only four of these six played significant roles during their teams’ national title runs — Watters, Weinke, Williams, and Young. What does this mean? Even if you sign the No. 1 recruit and win the national championship, there’s still a chance you won that national championship without much help from your former blue-chip recruit. So if history is any guide, Clowney won’t be the only reason South Carolina wins, if it does, and might not make much of an impact even if they do. Logic dictates otherwise, given Clowney’s colossal talent, but it’s interesting to note that having the best recruit in the country has been less beneficial than one might think.
