The reign of Uga VIII, who took over as Georgia’s mascot in mid-October, has proven to be tragically short-lived. Uga VIII, formerly known as “Big Bad Bruce,” died Friday from lymphoma at the age of 17 months. That not even 10 in dog years, and his four-month stay atop the throne is just a bit over two years in dog-time.
Russ Returns To Throne With Untimely Death Of Uga VIII
↵↵“We all mourn the loss of Uga VIII, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Seiler family at this time,” said Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity, referring to the Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler family of Savannah, long-time owners of the Uga line of mascots.
↵↵Now, one has to be very sensitive when addressing this subject, because Georgia fans take the Uga mascots very, very seriously. But we should note that the death of Uga VIII means the return of interim mascot Russ, who was essentially dumped for Big Bad Bruce, despite valorous service in taking over in the wake of the death of Uga VII in 2009.
↵Not that we’re saying anything happened. But Uga IX might want to keep an eye on Russ, just in case.
