The early reports out of Villanova on Monday had merit, as it happens, and Tuesday’s planned vote on whether or not the program will join the Big East has been put on indefinite hold thanks to existent member concerns about Nova’s lack of a high-capacity stadium. SB Nation’s Nova Blog has an email from university president Fr. Peter Donohue that reads, in part:

Big East football already has a bit of an inferiority complex. The last thing it needs is to be playing conference games inside a stadium with a capacity only slightly larger than that of the Bucknell Bison.
That seems to be the sticking point for some of the conference’s teams on the eve of Villanova’s announcement as to whether or not they plan to move their football program to the FBS level and join the Big East. As such, the school has reportedly postponed its vote and announcement in order to figure how to sway those concerned parties.

Next Tuesday, the Villanova Wildcats Board of Trustees will meet to vote on whether the school should accept the Big East Conference’s invitation. Conference commissioner John Marinatto will need to be informed beforehand of the school’s likely decision in advance, as there’s also a press conference scheduled for that same day.
Villanova has been a member of the Colonial Athletic Association since the conference began in 2005, winning a 2009 national title. The program does have a history of top-level college football success — in days of yore, the Wildcats had a few streaks of ranked finishes in the ’30s and ’50s.
