BYU Football Willing To Overlook The Whole Mormon Thing

You probably just assume everyone who plays football BYU is a card-carrying Mormon. And traditionally, that might have been true. But these days, the religion of college football wins trumps even Mormonism.

18 of BYU’s 19 signees from the class of 2011 are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The 19th player is linebacker Bobby Wolford, a self-described devout Catholic. Wolford is just one of many non-LDS players who have offers from the Cougars.

So who’s responsible for all this non-traditional recruiting? That would be BYU football recruiting coordinator and running backs coach Joe DuPaix, seen after the jump hypnotizing you as he stands in front of the Brigham Young Wall of Illusion.

Now that they’re going in the Independent route, BYU is going to need to take things to the next level in order to play in top-tier bowls, maybe even a BCS one. Stepping outside the box of recruiting LDS-only athletes is the first step of many.
