In Which Paying Players Leads To The College Football Lockout

A lot of folks have now come to the conclusion that college football players should be paid something, even if a small amount of spending money on top of the scholarship and such. Even such noted curmudgeons as Jim Delany have supported the notion.

Of course, it can’t be that easy, can it?

“If they are paid more than the cost of attendance,” Matt Mitten, the director of the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette Law School, said of student-athletes, “they would likely be characterized as employees. And that has a number of implications.”

If they are employees, some or all of the athletic scholarships they receive might be taxed as income.

If they are employees, they might unionize.

Another football union. Because that’s exactly what the college game needs right now.
