Why College Athletes Should NOT Get Paid To Play

There are plenty of great reasons to pay college football and basketball players, and every few months, a new argument emerges chastising the NCAA’s blatant hypocrisy. Like Desmond Howard this week. Or that awesome South Park episode a few months ago.

↵But today at Sports Illustrated, Joe Posnanski argues the opposite. “Paying the stars seems to be sending college football careening away from anything close to the point,” he writes.

↵I think he’s dead wrong—any time rules are being broken by a majority of the people they’re supposed to regulate, there’s something wrong with the rules—but he presents the case for amateurism as well as anyone ever has. Check it out, because disagreements are healthy.
