The saga of Ashton Broyld took another interesting turn when it was revealed that he wouldn’t be suiting up for the Syracus Orange football team in 2011. No official reason was given, but Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician has a theory seems to think academics at least played a part. There was also this:
Ashton Broyld Will Not Play For Syracuse In 2011 Season
That said, I can’t imagine BroyldLewdExposureGate didn’t play into it. Marrone has doled out harsh consequences for much less.
In addition to Broyld not playing this season, it was also revealed that fellow highly touted recruit Tyree Smallwood would also not be able to suit up for 2011. Both players will likely be able to red-shirt this season and retain their four years of eligibility.
Broyld and Smallwood both came to Syracuse with impressive high school resumes. Broyld, a dual-threat quarterback, passed for 24 touchdowns and 1,961 yards and rushed for 24 touchdowns and 1,540 yards during his senior season. Smallwood, a running back, scored 10 touchdowns and rushed for 962 yards on just 123 carries his season year.
