It figures that the man in charge of football’s worst BCS conference would be the man to bring some civility when Texas A&M threatened to move to the SEC.
Big East Commissioner John Marinatto Is The Peacebringer In Conference Realignment
In an era without any interconference communication, Big East Commissioner John Marinatto reached out to the leaders of the Big 12, ACC and NCAA during the Texas A&M-to-SEC rumblings.
The Big East’s commissioner, John Marinatto, reportedly called NCAA President Mark Emmert, Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe and ACC Commissioner John Wofford in a matter of days to try and stop the behind-the-scenes dealings that have come to define conference expansion.
Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports has the story:
“I suggested to both Dan Beebe and John Swofford that the Big East, Big 12 and ACC take the lead and meet face-to-face to collaborate in a manner that is consistent with Mark Emmert’s recent call for integrity within college athletics,” Marinatto told CBSSports.com.
Obviously, just talking won’t get anything done. Considering Marinatto just poached TCU last year, this also sounds like a touch of hypocrisy. However, the way McMurphy presented this revelation, it sounds as if this might have been the first time any conference heads have met about expansion. If that’s the case, then maybe this whole ordeal can become a lot more civil when/if A&M actually moves to the SEC.
