Alshon Jeffery Involved In Minor Car Accident, Held Out Of South Carolina Practice

South Carolina star Alshon Jeffery is being held out of practice after being involved in a minor car accident.

As far and away the most talented wide receivers in the SEC, Alshon Jeffery is likely to have a big year in 2011. But South Carolina's star junior missed practice Wednesday, Travis Haney of Charleston's Post and Courier reports, because of a "minor" car accident, which certainly isn't the way any player wants to start a season.

Steve Spurrier told the media that Jeffery suffered a minor back injury with whiplash after being rear-ended in an accident, but that he could return as soon as Thursday. Jeffery was present at practice and looked none the worse for wear, Haney notes, but was likely being held out as a precaution.

Jeffery was more than just one of the pieces of the Gamecocks' passing game in 2010; undeniably, he was the focal point of Spurrier's aerial attack. Jeffery hauled in 88 catches for 1,517 yards, leading the SEC in both categories, and caught at least three passes in every South Carolina game. South Carolina's second-leading receiver, Tori Gurley, snared just 43 passes in 2010.

This isn’t the first time Jeffery and an automotive have made headlines together, either: former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin allegedly attempted to recruit Jeffery to Knoxville by telling him that he would pump gas for a living if he went to South Carolina.
