South Carolina starting cornerback Akeem Auguste has re-injured the foot that kept him out of most of the preseason. He had finally returned to practice last Wednesday, but could once again be headed for extended time on the bench. He re-injured the foot during a non-contact drill Monday evening.
Akeem Auguste Injury: South Carolina Starting Cornerback Re-Injures Foot
Akeem Auguste’s injury leaves the Gamecocks thin in the secondary for the team’s season opener.
“He was doing well, then he twisted it and hurt his foot again,” defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward said. “We’ll see an evaluation in the morning. I don’t know if he re-injured to the point it was at first, but he was doing well and then all of a sudden he made a cut on it and hurt it again.”
C.C. Whitlock will start in place of Auguste for the team's season opener against East Carolina. Ward is confident that the senior will be able to step up.
“I’m 100 percent sure that C.C. will start,” Ward said. “I think C.C. has done fine. I think he’s gotten better in this camp. Even (head) coach (Steve) Spurrier admitted that he’s getting better, but he’s got to make plays when they’re there.”
