Case McCoy, David Ash Supplant Garrett Gilbert On Texas Depth Chart

It's almost like the Texas Longhorns went out of their way to avoid giving legacy quarterback Case McCoy the starting job in hopes of avoiding nepotism charges. Two weeks in, McCoy has essentially been named the new starter, with freshman David Ash set to pick up snaps as well. Former starter Garrett Gilbert is third on the new depth chart, making him unlikely to see the field any time soon.

After Gilbert looked awful against the BYU Cougars, throwing two picks and completing only 25 percent of his passes, the Horns whirled McCoy and Ash in and out of the pocket for the rest of the night, leading to much confusion on the part of viewers who were flipping between that game and Michigan-Notre Dame or Utah-USC.

Ash is averaging 9.3 yards per attempt on the year, while McCoy has completed seven of his 10 attempts. Itty bitty sample sizes all around for both of those. Ash also adds a dimension or three, having rushed nine times for 36 yards and caught a 23-yard pass.

It’s hard to say which of the two will end up with more playing time by the end of the year, but Gilbert’s completion percentage is under 50 after two games, so something had to be done.
